| The Naval Support Force Antarctica (NSFA) was decommissioned at CBC Port Hueneme California on March 12, 1998. The following year Antarctic Development Squadron Six (VXE-6) was decommissioned at NAS Point Mugu California on March 27, 1999. With the disestablishment of these two major commands this marked the end of over 44 years of the US Navy support of science in Antarctica. By mid-1999 a loosely knit group of Antarctic veterans formed an email group for the purposes of sharing Antarctic experiences. By the end of the year this group had evolved into a more formal group Known as the Old Antarctic Explorers Association. The Old Antarctic Explorer Association (OAEA) Coins were created to commemorate the establishment of the OAEA. One side of the coin depicts the OAEA logo with the original Deep Freeze logo on the reverse side side of the coin. The coin has been minted in silver, bronze, brass, and aluminum.
